Brisbane carries the highest regional cost multiplier of any major Australian capital in 2026. Between post-flood rebuilding, 2032 Olympics infrastructure and strong population growth, the trades market is stretched. Here is what a new deck actually costs in Brisbane right now, broken down by material type.
Deck pricing in Brisbane is quoted per square metre, fully installed. That means supply of decking boards, subframe construction, labour, fixings and basic finishing. It does not include balustrades, stairs, roofing or council permit fees, which are all additional.
Brisbane sits at 1.32× the national base rate, making it the most expensive capital for outdoor construction in this calculator. High trades demand, materials freight from southern suppliers and a competitive labour market all contribute.
| Material | Per m² (installed, Brisbane) | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Treated pine | $265–$330/m² | H3 or H4 treated pine decking, treated pine subframe, galvanised fixings, basic sanding. Most affordable option. Requires regular oiling and staining. |
| Hardwood (Merbau/Spotted Gum) | $395–$460/m² | Kiln-dried hardwood decking, hardwood or steel subframe, stainless fixings. More durable, better appearance, longer lifespan. Suited to Queensland climate. |
| Composite (mid-range) | $460–$605/m² | Wood-plastic composite boards on aluminium or steel subframe. Lower maintenance, no oiling required. Brands like Trex, Ekodeck, ModWood. 10-25 year warranties typical. |
| Premium capped composite | $660–$790/m² | Top-tier capped composite with premium subframe. Includes Trex Transcend, Fiberon Paramount or equivalent. Fade, stain and scratch resistant. Best long-term value for low maintenance. |
These rates are for ground-level decks with straightforward access. Elevated decks, decks built on sloping sites, and decks requiring engineered footings will cost more, sometimes significantly.
Brisbane City Council generally requires a building approval for decks more than 1 metre above natural ground level, or decks that cover more than 10m². Check your specific council requirements before engaging a builder, as thresholds vary across South East Queensland councils.
Any deck more than 1 metre above ground level requires a compliant balustrade under the National Construction Code. Budget $150–$350 per linear metre for glass, $100–$200 for aluminium, or $80–$150 for timber. Glass balustrades on a 40m² elevated deck can easily add $5,000–$8,000.
A single flight of timber stairs typically costs $1,500–$3,500 depending on material and height. Wraparound stairs or multiple access points push this higher.
Decks built on sloping blocks or raised significantly above ground level require engineered footings and a more complex subframe. Expect a 20–40% cost increase over ground-level pricing. In some cases, a structural engineer will need to sign off on the design, adding $800–$2,000 in engineering fees.
If your Brisbane property is in a designated bushfire zone, the deck must comply with AS 3959 (Construction of buildings in bushfire-prone areas). This can restrict material choices and require fire-rated subframe components. BAL compliance can add $2,000–$6,000 depending on the BAL rating and deck size.

Open Calculator →Brisbane is the most expensive city for deck construction in this calculator. The same 40m² hardwood deck that costs around $15,800 in Adelaide would cost approximately $19,500 in Brisbane, a difference of roughly $3,700. This is driven almost entirely by the regional labour multiplier and high trades demand.
If you are building in Brisbane, get quotes early. Trades are booking out further than in other capitals, and material lead times for hardwoods can stretch to 4–6 weeks during peak season (September through March).
Queensland's subtropical climate is hard on outdoor timber. High UV exposure, seasonal humidity and heavy rainfall mean your material choice matters more here than in southern states.
Treated pine is the cheapest option but requires the most maintenance. It needs re-oiling every 12–18 months and will grey out quickly without treatment. Life expectancy is 15–20 years with proper care.
Hardwood (Merbau or Spotted Gum) handles Queensland conditions well. It is naturally resistant to rot, termites and UV damage. Most hardwoods need oiling once a year. Life expectancy is 25–40 years.
Composite decking requires almost no maintenance and handles humidity well. Higher-end capped composites resist fading, staining and mould better than entry-level options. Life expectancy is 25–50 years depending on product.
Always obtain at least three written quotes from QBCC-licensed contractors. Ask specifically about subframe material, fixing type, warranty coverage and whether council approval is included in the quote or separate. A deck quote that does not specify these items is incomplete.
A typical Brisbane deck project: 40m² ground-level Merbau hardwood deck with a single set of stairs and no balustrade (under 1m height).
Estimated cost: $16,000–$19,500 (including 1.32× Brisbane multiplier, supply, subframe, labour, fixings, basic finishing). Add $4,000–$7,000 if the deck is elevated with glass balustrades.
